Obituary for Betty Jean Chaney

Betty Jean Steele Chaney, 82, of Rice Station Rd, widow of Eugene Chaney, passed away Tuesday at her home, surrounded by her loved ones. She was born in Harlan County, on May 30th, 1929, a daughter of the late Ellen Osborne Steele. Mrs. Chaney worked as a telephone operator as a young woman in Harlan, and later in Detroit, Michigan. It was on a bus ride from Detroit back to Kentucky that she met the love of her life, Eugene. They went on to be married for 54 wonderful years, building a life together and to raising a loving family in Irvine. They attended Rice Station Christian Church together where Mrs. Chaney was very active. She organized the annual Rice Station Christian Church Community Christmas Dinner, and was very active in the youth program there. She was also very active in her community, sitting on the ASCS board. Survivors include three sons Mike and Jeanette Chaney of Richmond, Curtis and Pat Chaney of Monticello IL, and Howard and Shannon Chaney of Irvine; a daughter Lisa and Gary Newton of Berea; eight grandchildren Karen Dozier, J.D. (Colleen) Chaney, Jessica (Chris) Masters, Joshua Newton, Justin Newton, Courtney Chaney, Stephanie Chaney, Jakolbi Crowe, and Jessup Chaney; three great grandchildren Ashleigh Dozier, Aiden Masters, and Adaleen Chaney; several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Chaney was preceded in death by her siblings Olin Steele Jr. and Kathleen Wooten. Services will be held Friday, June 1st, 2:00 PM at Rice Station Christian Church, with Bro. Kirt Scott officiating. Burial will follow in the Sunset Memorial Gardens. Friends may call anytime after 5:00 PM Thursday at Rice Station Christian Church, and after 11:00 AM Friday at Rice Station Christian until service time. Pallbearers will be J.D. Chaney, Joshua Newton, Justin Newton, Chris Masters, Jakolbi Crowe, Gary Newton, Ron Steele, and Danny Long. Honorary pallbearers will be Jessup Chaney, Robert Bates, and Elders & Deacons of Rice Station Christian Church. The family requests donations to Rice Station Christian Church Youth Program or Hospice.
