Obituary

Sally Ray Hobbs Hill, 95, died Thursday, February 22, 2018 at Marcum Wallace Memorial Hospital in Irvine after a short illness. Born in St. Helens, Kentucky, on Flag Day in 1922, she was the daughter of Daniel Clay and Viola Hieronymus Hobbs. She was a graduate of St. Helens High School at age16 and the University of Kentucky in 1944 with a B.S. in vocational home economics. Sally and Virgil D. Hill married during World War II. They had three children: Nancy (Monte) Farmer, Dr. James D. Hill, and Dr. Margaret Hill (Dr. Regan Moore). Also surviving are grandchildren Dennis Farmer (Michelle), Jamie Hill, and Lindsay Hill plus six great-grandchildren: Mckinlee, Kaylee, Kelby, and Brady Farmer, and Destiny and Zackary Chrisman. She worked for the U.S. Census Bureau as an enumerator in five eastern Kentucky counties. She also taught in one-room schools in Lee County and Wolfe County, at Ravenna Grade School, and retired as a teacher and food service director for the Estill County Schools. Sally was a member of Irvine United Methodist Church and the Estill County Retired Teachers Association. She was a charter member of Pi Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma. She enjoyed reading, sewing, cooking, and keeping up with her family and friends despite arthritis and age. Her "girls," Carolyn, Shirley, Betty, Hailey, Debbie, Shirley T., Lynda, and Bonnie enabled her to enjoy her Ravenna home until her final illness. Dr. Maher Kassis and the kind and caring staff at Marcum Wallace Hospital eased her transition to a better world. Visitation for Sally H. Hill will be from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 24, at Lewis/Abner Home for Funerals and from 1:00 to a 2:30 p.m. funeral service at Irvine United Methodist Church.
