Obituary

Shirley Ann Wilson Rowland, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt left this life to enter her heavenly home on November 6, 2024, at the age of 77.

Shirley was born on October 27, 1947, to Lewis and Rachel Wilson. Anyone who knew Shirley loved her because of her infectious smile, sweet, funny and spunky personality. She was always singing funny little songs or telling funny stories.

Shirley, being a single parent, became both a mother and father to her two daughters, Lela and Pam. She taught them how to change tires, change oil in their cars, and use virtually any kind of motorized equipment. There wasn't much that Shirley couldn't do. She worked as a waitress at the Halfway House in Peytona, a seamstress for Fruit of the Loom in Frankfort, and retired from factory work at Black and Decker in Shelbyville. Shirley also worked many evenings and weekends helping others in tobacco and other farm work. She was a hard worker and showed love and kindness to all. Always putting others first. She instilled these same values in her daughters.

In 1999, Shirley married her soul mate, Verlon Rowland. They settled in Estill County where they spent their retirement enjoying time with family and friends and on their boat fishing the Kentucky River.

Besides her parents, Shirley was proceeded in death by siblings Geraldine Nilles, R.L. Wilson, Sonny and Jimmy Wilson, Bessie Hudson, Gladys Downey, and her sister by marriage, Sue Wilson.

She is survived by loving husband of 25 years, Verlon Rowland, daughters Lela Hatter (Brent) and Pam Thompson (Bryan), brother J.W. Wilson, grandchildren Brandy Hatter, Christy Jones (Donnie), Jacob, Brady, and Zach Thompson, great-grandchildren, Parker and Tyler Jones, and Tristan Carlile as well as special nieces and nephews who were just like her own children.

To honor Shirley's wishes, cremation was chosen with no services. A celebration of life will be held at a later date with family and friends.

On behalf of our family, we would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff at Mercy Health Marcum and Wallace Hospital for the excellent care given to Shirley. We appreciate the kindness and empathy that you have shown us.
